Bachelor Buttons

Bachelor buttons add an element of beauty to any garden or fresh cut floral arrangement.  They possess a starburst appearance, can grow to be anywhere from one to two feet in height, and bloom beautifully in wide open areas.  Finally, because bachelor buttons require little care, they make for a simple addition to any backyard!

Historically speaking, bachelor buttons were once used to create a number of different blue dies used in foods.  Currently, in addition to growing wild all over the globe, bachelor buttons are used to add a splash of vibrant color to backyards, and fresh floral arrangements.  What’s more, bachelor buttons are adored by those individuals who select to dry and preserve their flowers; bachelor buttons dry beautifully and retain their natural condition well.

Bachelor buttons, also known as blue cornflowers, primarily owe the origins to Europe and can be found in areas all over the world.   Bachelor buttons typically grow in hues of blue, pink, red, and lavender and make a wonderful addition to any springtime bouquet!  Equally, bachelor buttons can make for a unique and beautiful floral arrangement by mixing the various colors available.

Bachelor buttons are annual plants, thus if a gardener intends on planting them they should know that they will not return for another season.  Therefore, if a gardener is particularly fond of this bloom, they will be required to replant the flower the following season.  Still, the extra work is well worth it because bachelor buttons, much like asters, require absolutely no follow up care once they are planted!  Conversely, there are certain species of bachelor buttons that are perennial and a gardener can opt to purchase them.

When planting bachelor buttons, a gardener will be required to plant them in a spacious area, as bachelor buttons tend to spread quickly. Also, before planting bachelor buttons, a gardener will have more success if they first refrigerate the seeds for a period of time; a period of several days is more than sufficient. Additionally, seeds should be planted in an extremely sunny area after the last frost of the winter season.  Finally, seeds should be planted approximately two feet apart to provide adequate room for growth.

Bachelor buttons can be started both indoors and outdoors.      Once bachelor button seeds are planted, they take approximately 7 to 10 days to germinate.  Seeds can be planted in any kind of soil, as bachelor buttons are typically a field plant and therefore are highly adaptable.  Finally, when bachelor buttons grow they can grow well over a foot and their blooms will begin emerging in the month of May through June, if their seeds are planted in the early spring.  Thus, when planting bachelor buttons, a gardener will see fairly quick results, as blooms will begin to appear in roughly 4 to 6 weeks.

Finally, fresh cut bachelor buttons can be purchased at online floral shops.  Likewise, seeds can be purchased at online gardening centers and are fairly inexpensive.  Finally, if a gardener chooses to shop offline, bachelor buttons are fairly easy to obtain by paying a visitor to their local gardening center of florist!
